Yesterday I woke up with zero motivation.
I haven’t made a single resolution, though I did see a special about the health benefits of plant-based eating, so maybe that.
No 2024 plan. Goals all over the place.
At this rate, I’ll be lucky to get out of my yoga pants by February.
Belly scratch and third cup of coffee…here’s what I’m thinking.
First, a little grace. 2023 was a hard year, especially the last bit. If I feel tired, so be it.
What’s more, the things that made 2023 challenging are showing up as big overcoming goals for 2024.
And that’s daunting…cue overwhelm and exhaustion.
Net/net, I’ll let myself ease in to 2024.
Next, appreciative inquiry. For this, I find 1-2 accomplishments from each month of 2023 that I’m happy about.
I then cross out the accomplishments that didn’t energize me.
For the ones that DID energize me or my team, I ask four questions:
- What was the accomplishment?
- Why was it important?
- What would further progress look like?
- What, if any, are immediate next steps?
Then I build the year ahead by following that energy. This doesn’t mean there aren’t certain things you have to do, but you can adjust HOW you do them.
By following the energy, you lean into the approach that highlights your strengths.
And finally, I play with the vision and the fears. Often a lack of motivation is really either fear in disguise, or a lack of imagining something that truly resonates.
Daring to sit in a vision that excites, can help you rethink your plan. Maybe you’re thinking too small.
Imagining the vision also has a way of shaking out the fears. What’s in the way, is usually where you fear you’ll fall short.
As of this writing my plan was to go for a walk, and get some groceries for dinner.
Seems ambitious enough for one day.
Have a great 2024!
