What is instead of saying, “When I feel confident, I’ll be able to do X,” you said, “When do I feel confident?”
And then you explored the circumstances around the feeling and built around that?
My first principle in the “I to the 4th Power” system is Impact, which is about knowing your strengths.
There’s a reason for that.
When you know what comes naturally, you can explore the confidence you feel and build around it.
To be clear, there are moments where you are taking on a challenge, or growing in expertise.
It’s normal if confidence feels challenging then.
But when a lack of confidence becomes habitual, or part of identity, it’s what Shirzad Chamine calls the saboteur criticizing circumstances.
“When I get a Tesla, a certain job, a group of friends, or lose weight, I will be successful, or happy, or victorious.”
“When I feel confident, all the time, I’ll be able to do X.”
What if this week, you consider situations where you aren’t feeling confident.
What would it be like if you could be yourself, and know you couldn’t fail?
How would you show up?
Then, you have choices. Maybe you’re in a moment of temporary doubt because it’s a growth opportunity.
Or maybe it’s a moment to rethink the circumstances.
Could you do it differently?
Or not at all?
When confidence becomes one more way you judge yourself, it’s not useful.
Let yourself shine.
