Put a GR on that Attitude!

The other day my kids were complaining and whining in a particularly grating way. I breathed, breathed some more, and then blurted out, “Let’s put a “Gr” on that attitude!” Catchy, right? I was pretty satisfied with myself.

It reminded me of the second year of my business. That year five clients wanted help finding a new job. After working together, four of the five ended up staying and getting promoted instead. This was a huge eye-opener. I realized that you don’t always have to change outside circumstances to turn things around. With a focus on being authentic, gaining perspective, and appreciating their contribution and the resources that were available to them, those clients learned how to increase their influence in their companies. That led to more confidence, less stress and greater productivity. The trick was not just to be grateful for the paycheck and the expense account. The trick was to be more thankful for the unique approach they took and the impact they were having at work and in life.

Here’s an exercise to practice for one week. Each morning, dedicate a few minutes to sitting still, breathing and letting distractions go out of your mind. Think of three things you are grateful for. And this is important: Make one of those three about you. An approach you took, a perspective you are in, a talent you used, whatever. Then, write them down.

See how you feel each day, and at the end of the week. In the meantime, I will express my thanks for 1) an audience who reads my posts 2) a sense of humor that lets me make my blog content fun 3) the incredible learning that has come from working directly with so many people. What a joy!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Claire
