Morning Meditation

This morning before sunrise, I sat in my living room, hiding from my four-year old son. He came out of his room, didn’t see any activity, and went back to bed. Ugh. Am I terrible? No, I just needed my meditation time.

Huashan ChinaChanneling the energy we want to be in, is a fantastic way to start the day. The year I started my business, I would meditate on the time I climbed to the top of Huashan in China (see photo), after seeing it in a book. It was a lofty goal to go there, and it was a lofty goal to start a business. I needed that half-crazy, “I can do whatever I set my mind to!” energy. Later, during periods of work where I didn’t know when success would come, I meditated on long distance bike rides I had been on. Specifically, I would visualize taking my eyes off of the enormous hill in front of me, and shifting them down to my pedalling feet, and the dotted yellow line passing under me. It was a time to put my head down and “do the work,” so that energy served me well.

Now that the morning light is getting brighter, how about giving it a try? You don’t have to be a meditation master. Just think of a metaphor for the energy you want to be in, and visualize it in your mind as you breathe. Maybe a babbling brook, or a mountain top, or a beach, complete with bird calls and ocean smells. Then, make your To Do list from that energy, and I promise that you will own your day.

Enjoy the warming trend…Spring is on its way.
