Insights on Coaching Effectiveness from ICF’s Prism Awards Event

Last Tuesday I attended the International Coach Federation’s Prism Award event where talent development and coaching experts had a robust discussion on trends.  In the room were top coaches. On the panel were heads of Talent Development from PVH Corp, Google, Comcast, GSK, ESPN, Coca-Cola and Prudential, all of whom have in-house “universities” that include robust coaching programs.

Two super exciting trends stood out to me. First, best practice organizations are using coaching extensively and are innovating to develop adaptations that have the greatest impact. Second, coaches are responding to our clients’ need to make a business case by adding consulting components and ROI measurement. The bottom line: Everyone wants to make sure coaching is driving results and that those results are measurable. Here are a few highlights:

  • Companies and coaches are asking for better tools to measure ROI. The good news is that we are making progress and I will have more to share in the coming weeks.
  • Organizations are asking for clarity on how to integrate coaching into existing structures and strategy. Coaches are adding consulting elements that allow us to evaluate the need and integrate streamlined programs.
  • Best practice companies see coaching as a strategic decision, not a cost. Coca-Cola HBC Russia launched the internal Coach Culture Institute, and have seen +50% in revenues, +27% in employee engagement and -28% in sales force turnover.
  • Companies want employees to meet them halfway in leadership development. For eight years I have coached at Columbia Business School and School of International and Public Affairs. At SIPA our leadership course, Communicating in Organizations has ranked in the top 3% of 200 courses for four years running. In my experience, professionals are just as eager to demonstrate leadership and be engaged as their companies want them to be. Increasingly coaches are designing programs that leverage employees’ eagerness and ask them to step up and be accountable.
